Bio | He played tennis for the following Hungarian clubs: Újpest TE (1938-1949), Budapest Dózsa (1950-1956), Újpest Dózsa (1957-1964). He was the member of the Central European Cup winner's team in 1941, runner-up at Central European Cup in 1942 with his team. He was Hungarian international champion (1948, 1957, 1959 in men's doubles); Czechoslovakian champion (1948 in mixed doubles); Polish Champion (1948 in men's doubles). He was 21-times Hungarian champion (1940, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964 in Team competition; in 1950, 1957, 1959, 1961 in men's doubles, in 1951 in singles; in 1958 in men's doubles and in mixed doubles), as well as he was the member of the Hungarian Davis Cup team (1940-1962). He was the coach of Újpest Dózsa men's tennis section (1965-1972); his team was runner-up at European Cup (1970, 1971), third at European Cup (1972), the team won Mitropa Cup in 1968, and his team was eight-time Hungarian champion (1965-1972 in Team competition). He was one of the most significant doubles player of the Hungarian tennis history. After his retirement from active sport, he graduated as professional tennis coach at Sports Director and Coach Training Institute in 1966. Then he started to work as a coach. He designed and trained also the famous men's team of Újpest Dózsa, his best players were Baranyi Szabolcs (European champion), Geza Varga (eternal champion) and Janos Benyik (Hungarian champion); all of them participated at the Hungarian Davis Cup events. He was awarded as the eternal champion of Újpesti Dózsa in 1985. |
