Bio | He was a Colombian-born Spanish tennis coach and former professional player. He relocated to Spain in the 1970s and became a world acclaimed coach. Active on the international circuit between 1957 and 1971, Pato Álvarez won around 30 minor tournaments, mainly in France, but also in Germany and England. Among his victories are the Norwegian championship in 1960 and the Porée Cup in 1964. On the national level, he held eight titles of Champion of Colombia. He reached the 3rd round at Roland-Garros in 1961, beaten by Manuel Santana. After being eight times champion of Colombia and defending his country in the Davis Cup, 'Pato', also nicknamed 'pantera' by his circle of friends, moved to Spain in 1970. He hung up his racket as a tennis player two years later. There he made a great career as a technician. Known for his strict discipline and professionalism, he has collaborated with many renowned Spanish tennis players such as the brothers Emilio and Javier Sánchez, Sergio Casal and Julián Alonso. He also participated in the training of players such as Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov. A true "guru" of Spanish tennis, he greatly contributed to the success of Spanish tennis from the 1980s to the 2010s. Players of the stature of Andy Murray, Juan Mónaco or Grigor Dimitrov passed through his hands . He always stood out for demanding maximum discipline and professionalism from all his pupils. He worked for more than 15 years for the Spanish Tennis Federation, then for the Sánchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona. |
