Bio | He was the third child and the second son of William John Slidell and Ellen Collins. He graduated of Princeton University in 1895. He was the member of the Knickerbocker Club. He was the grandson of the famous Slidell, whose name was notable connected with the history of the civil war.(It was the episode of the capture of his grandfather on a British ship which led to complications between Great Britain and the Confederation during the Civil War.) In parts of the South (his grandfather's brother, Thomas Slidell was the chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court) the name was pronounced with the emphasis on the last syllable but Thomas Slidell pronounced his name with stress on the first syllable. He was a nephew of Alfred Slidell of Paris and New Orleans and of the Baroness Erlanger, the widow of the famous Paris financier. He is on his mother's side, a cousin of Perry and August Belmont and the Tiffany family. Slidell was an artist, a painter as well. He died of cancer in Paris. |
