He led McGill to three Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union tennis championships in six seasons (1934, 1935, 1936), serving as team captain in 1934-35. A four-time winner of the intercollegiate singles & doubles titles from 1934 to 1937, Murray also won the Quebec senior singles title in 1934 and 1937.
