Bio | Szoke was born just couple of weeks after the greatest Hungarian tennis player, Jozsef Asboth just won the men's singles title in Paris at Roland Garros. He began playing tennis at the age of nine when his family was invited to Godollo by a friend of family; there was a tennis court in the backyard where he played tennis for the first time. He immediately showed that he had a talent for tennis. He started to compete on club level at Voros Meteor (the later MTK) under the guidance of coach Antal Studer. After 2 months, he participated at his first official match against Bertalan Csoknyay. In 1971, he reached the final in Hamburg and lost to the Spaniard Andres Gimeno. As of today, he is the last Hungarian male player who played a final at the tournament in Hamburg. Szoke reached also 4 doubles finals in his career: in 1973 ( Calgary) and in 1979 (Linz) with Szabolcs Baranyi, while in 1976 (Florence) and 1978 (Bastad) as a partner of Balázs Taróczy, but he never managed to win. He was the member of the Hungarian National Team between 1967-1983, during 27 ties he won 9 singles and 17 doubles matches. One of his most memorable wins was the unforgettable 1978 match on Margaret Island in Budapest against the 1976 Roland Garros champion Adriano Panatta. He was also a member of the Davis Cup and the Kiraly-Cup winning team (1976) with Balázs Taróczy and János Benyik. Szoke has a winning record against John Newcombe (1-0) and Jan Kodes (2-0) during his career. At the end of his active career, he settled in Germany, where he lived until his death. |
