Bio | He is best known for his gold medal in the men's doubles event (alongside Maxwell Woosnam) at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. Noel Turnbull was also a semi-finalist in singles and he is defeated by the virtually unknown South African Louis Raymond who would later won the competition. After his studies Turnbull went to work in the owner company of the family but his business career was soon interrupted by the war. He first came to the area as a tennis player in 1919 and that same year made his Davis Cup debut. He participated again in the Davis Cup in 1921, but later shifted his interests to golf. Five years later he again part of the Davis Cup team in 1926 and won the singles on the Portuguese championships in 1928. In essence, however, he was a specialist and his double victory with Max Woosnam at the 1920 Games was undoubtedly his greatest achievement. |
