Bio | He was New Zealand national champion in 1939. Neil has lived in Upper Hutt nearly all his life and has been connected with various sports bodies in the district. He attended the Upper Hutt School but was not particularly interested in tennis during his primary education. After joining the Upper Hutt Tennis Club, Neil began to devote more time to the game. He climbed steadly up the club's ladder, with his eye on the top position held by Mr. George Robertson. Neil's ambition to wear the Goodwin Shield, a silver badge donated by Mr. J. Goodwin to the holder of top place on the ladder, was finally realized. His pride at the time of this achievement was probably as great as when, some ten years later, he recently won the highest honor in New Zealand Tennis, the national title in singles. From that day on Neil wore the Goodwin Shield for so long, that it almost started to grow on him. He also won the Wilkie Shield, the handicap singles event, four times. During the winter season Neil was an enthusiastic member of the Uppers Hutt Rugby Club, and played the game with as much zest as he did tennis. He was no mean player either being one of the cleverest inside backs the club has ever had. Neil is being sent to England to represent New Zealand in the Davis Cup matches, to play at Wimbledon, the mecca of all lawn tennis players, and to show their appreciation of this unique honor that has been conferred on him, and on the district, all Upper Hutt residents are invited to subscribe towards a fund to assist Neil in his travel overseas. The Upper Hutt public are therefore, asked to rally round and show by their donations that they are justly proud of their local boy's achievements. |
