| Bio | He was a tennis player in the 1960s and 1970s, playing for Ecuador. In 1960, as an unseeded player, he won the singles title at the Cincinnati Masters. He remains to this day the only unseeded player ever to win the singles title in Cincinnati. (The tournament began in 1899 and seeding began in 1927.) In 1967 in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Olvera and teammate Pancho Guzmán led the Ecuadorian Davis Cup to a stunning upset of the mighty United States Davis Cup team. After American Cliff Richey defeated Guzmán in the first singles match, Olvera, then 26 years old, faced Arthur Ashe in the second singles match. Ashe had never lost a set in ten previous Davis Cup matches, but Olvera came back after dropping the first set to win 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–2. Ecuadorian captain Danny Carrera was so thrilled with the win that he attempted to jump the net to embrace Olvera, tripped and broke his leg. At 21, Guzmán then teamed with Olvera in the doubles, and overcame a 0–6, 2–5 deficit to knock off Marty Riessen and Clark Graebner 0–6,9–7,6–4,4–6,8–6. The next day, Guzmán beat Ashe in five sets to give Ecuador the victory. In 1968, he participated at the Olympic Games tennis competition in Mexico City. He takes the 4th place in doubles associated with Pancho Guzmán failing in the match counting for the bronze medal against the Franco-Mexican pair Darmon / Loyo Mayo. Not very active on the circuit for a few years, he interrupted his career in 1970, still playing in the Davis Cup until 1977, including with his student Ricardo Ycaza. In 1973, he succeeded Danny Carrera as captain of the team he led until 1981. Today, Olvera is a tennis coach in Guayaquil, Ecuador. In 2018, he obtained the title of the IV ITF Seniors Grade 1 Tournament City of Guayaquil, category 75 years, which was held at the Guayaquil Tenis Club. With this trophy, Olvera, glory of Ecuadorian tennis, achieved his fourth consecutive title since in 2015 the ITF seniors were institutionalized. In the final, the Ecuadorian defeated one of the favorites of the tournament, the American Robert F. Royden, 6-1 and 6-3. At the end of the match, the tricolor said that “since 2015 I have been playing ITF in Guayaquil I have not lost a match. I am undefeated, I hope to continue like this, but for this we must continue preparing. ” Miguel Olvera participates internationally in ITF Seniors and World Cup tournaments in the category. He is currently a tennis teacher at school that bears his name at the FET National Tennis Center. |
