Bio | He is a former tennis player from England, who turned professional in 1988. Petchey was educated at Forest School, a prominent Independent School in north-east London. He began playing tennis at the age 8. His first coach (until he was 17 or 18) was his father, Rod who made a special racquet that his son could lift easily. Petchey claimed his first junior tournament in 1981, at Norbury (Surrey), then went on to capture 4 grass-court singles (14s, 16s, 18s) and 8 national doubles titles. He became pro in 1988. The right-hander won one doubles title (Nottingham in 1996) in his career. The former British No 1 reached his career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 80 in August 1994, winning 3 Challenger events. His best performance in a Grand Slam came in the 1997 Wimbledon Championships. He defeated Ján Krošlák and Tommy Haas before losing to Boris Becker in the third round. He was a member of Great Britain's Davis Cup team between 1991 and 1997 (6-11 record). On his Davis Cup debut, Petchey beat Thomas Muster against Austria in a World Group qualifying round tie. He retired due to injury, at age 28, in August 1998, to concentrate on coaching and media work. He was named LTA Manager of Men's National Training in September 2003 and resigned in July 2005 to coach Andy Murray, until April 2006. During his time with Murray, the Scot moved from No. 351 to No. 41 and captured his first ATP title in San Jose. Furthermore, he coached Silvija Talaja to the world's Top 20 and Tina Pisnik to the Top 30. He started his television commentary career at Eurosport and as a radio summariser on BBC Five Live. He works for Sky Sports, ITV and the BBC providing commentary and analysis for ATP Tour tennis. |
