Bio | He was a Balkan cup winner (1936) and scored 116 international victories. He was also 55 times Pan Hellenic winner, 17 titles in singles(1934-1940, 1947-1956), 20 in doubles (1933,1935-1940, 1946-1955, 1958-60) and 18 in mixed (1937-1940, 1946-1954, 1958-1961, 1963) in the Greek National Championship. Unfortunately, his career was interrupted by the WWII (for 6 years, there was no tournament in Greece.) He won the Eastern Mediterranean Cup in singles (1947-48), in doubles (1939, 1947) and mixed (1947). He was an athlete of the Thessaloniki Tennis Club and the top of his time, even the guy of the season wrote "from him starts the Greek tennis and stops" or mentioned this era "dictatorship of Stalios". In the yearly Panhellenic referendum of Athletic Echo, he was the best Greek tennis player for 1949. He is one of the rare Greek players to reach the stage never exceeded by his country of the 1/8 finals of a Grand Slam tournament. In 1936 at Roland Garros he had a bye in the first round then a walkover against Jacques Brugnon, then he beat Jacques Lecointre and he lost against Gottfried von Cramm (6-3, 6-3, 6-2) the eventual winner of the tournament. That year he participated in Wimbledon where he lost in the first round as well as a year later at Roland Garros. From 1933 to 1947 he played 8 ties in Greek Davis Cup team and he won only the first one against Romania. He had 7 defeats in doubles and 4 wins and 11 defeats in singles. He played one of his last tournaments in 1953 in Lebanon at Brummana. |
