Bio | At the peak of his career in 1907, when he reached No. 3 in the United States, Karl Behr was a solid shotmaker and thoughtful tactician with much savvy on the court. Seven times a member of the U.S. top ten, Behr paved the way for his success in amateur tennis by winning the U.S. Intercollegiate Doubles title as a student at Yale University in 1904. He went on to play Davis Cup for the United States. In 1912, Behr survived the sinking of the Titanic and played on at a high level for a few years after that frightening experience. After Karl Behr's death in 1949 his wife Helen married one of his best friends and tennis partners Dean Mathey. |
