Bio He was 7 when he picked up the game.

He received a tennis scholarship from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in 1964. That came after he won the first Asian Junior (18-and-under)title in singles and in doubles. In addition, he (at age 16) and three other junior players from the Philippines had a chance to be trained for more than two months by the legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman.

He was among SIU’s top singles players for three years and competed against some of the nation’s top tennis college teams.

Later, he had a distinguished professional career. In 1975, he qualified to play in a Grand Prix tournament at Soldier Field in Chicago, where he faced John Alexander, the world’s 10th-rated player at the time who edged Villarete in a competitive 7-5, 6-3 match.

Villarete has also won a variety of USTA singles and doubles titles at the state and Midwest levels. In 1970, he was among those who opened the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago. His pupils there later included actress Elke Sommer, comedian Alan King and AT & T President Charles Brown.

He degree in financial management major in college, in the mid-1980s, then Villarete ventured into the financial world, taking in sales and marketing roles in the investment and insurance business.

He was also a director of the Chicago Tennis Patrons, a non-profit organization that is the fundraising arm of the Chicago District Tennis Association.
