Bio | He won his first tournament in 1943 at the age of 12 when he won a city-sponsored tournament for youngsters. Since then, he has won California state titles in every age category as well as several national and collegiate honors. Between the years 1945 and 1949, he won the California State Boy Singles title (1945 and 1946), California State Junior Singles (1948 and 1949). National Hardcourt Junior Singles (1948), the Southern California Junior Singles (1949), and the National Indoor Junior Singles (1949). He was National Junior College Men's Singles champion in 1952, the same year he began a two-year hitch with the U.S. Army. Stationed in the Far East, he won Southwestern Command singles and doubles titles and all-Far-East singles and doubles, and the all-Japan singles and doubles championships. Following his discharge, he won the California Men's singles in 1954. Prior to turning pro in 1956, he was the Northern California Intercollegiate champion for the University of San Francisco. |
