Bio | He was a West German tennis player. Ingo Buding belongs to the Banat Swabian ethnic group. After the Second World War he came to Germany from Romania as an ethnic German. Here he started a successful tennis career. Buding reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 1965 and won the Boys' Singles title in 1959 and 1960. At the 1968 Olympics exhibition event, he finished in second place to Rafael Osuna (and reached the second round of the main demonstration event). In 1970, he led a German Davis Cup team into a final for the first time as captain and player. In Cleveland, the final venue, the Germans clearly lost to the US opponent 5-0. Overall, he played 51 games in the Davis Cup between 1961 and 1970. For his success he was honored by the German Tennis Association (DTB) with the badge of honor in gold and on November 23, 1970 with his Davis Cup colleagues Wilhelm Bungert and Christian Kuhnke with the "Silver Laurel Leaf". To date, the Silver Laurel Leaf has only been awarded to women seven times and to men five times (two of which to a Davis Cup team). |
