Bio | He was educated at Eton and succeeded to a baronetcy over 300 years old, while the family name dated to a grant of the Saxon King Ethelward in 880. After several years spent in Europe, the Near East and the Orient, Sir Herbert served for 3 years in the legation at Washington shortly after the turn of the century. He achieved distinction in the United States by virtue of his prowess at lawn tennis. From Washington Sir Herbert wen to Stockholm, where he became First Secretary and received the Swedish Order of Polar Star. From 1911 to 1915 he was Counselor of the British Embassy in Rome. Thereafter until 1919, he was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Siam and later held the same post in Rumania. |
