Bio Frederick William Payn was a British amateur tennis player at the turn of the 20th century. He reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1900 and 1902 and the finals of the German International Championships in 1901.
In 1900, he beat S.H.Smith, the mighty hitter in two straight sets at Newcastle. He won the Scottish championship singles and doubles and was also a winner of numerous county championship, besides open events.

Payn was an expert left handed volleyer player and an able sportsman who often beat better player than himself that time.
He was an all-round athlete also a famous walker and climber. Possibly he was best know in New Zealand as a writer.
His ultimate love of travel took him often to many different places on the Continent, where he won many foreign tournaments including championship of Frankfurt, Russia, Moravia, Sweden, Vienna and Denmark. He also got to the final for the championship of Germany, Austria and Holland.
