Bio He was the youngest son of the late Mayor Abram Stevens Hewitt of New York and Sarah Amelia Cooper.
He graduated from Princeton University with honors in Political Science in 1891.
In 1893, he received a master's degree from Princeton and a law degree from New York University.
In the Spanish-American war, he served as assistant adjutant with the rank of captain on the staff of General James H. Wilson in Puerto Rico.
After the war, he was associated with the firm of Cooper & Hewitt, the New Jersey Steel and Iron company as well as the Trenton Iron company. After the fusion of those firms as United States Steel Corporation, Hewitt was interested himself in manufacturing, mining and real estate.

He was an official and a director in several corporations.
