| Bio | When McNeil was at the top of his game and in command of his powers, not even the estimable Bobby Riggs could prevent him from becoming U.S. National Singles Champion in 1940. Also victorious over Riggs in the final of the French Championships in 1939, McNeil moved swiftly around the court and adapted to different surfaces extraordinarily well. With this victory he became the second American to win the French championships (after Don Budge). Only eight American men in the history of the French Open have won the singles title. Admired for his sportsmanship, he was a member of the American top ten six times, attaining the No. 1 spot once. He also took two majors in doubles. There were no "official" amateur rankings during WW2 - McNeill reached as high as World No. 7 in Gordon Lowe's amateur rankings list in 1939. Don McNeill graduated from Kenyon College in 1940, where he became a brother of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. John was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1965. |
