Bio | He was the eldest son of Princeton Day School founder and benefactor, Dean Mathey. With his brothers, he attended Deerfield Academy and Princeton. An accomplished athlete, he captained soccer, ice hockey, and tennis teams at Princeton Country Day, feats he would go on to repeat at Deerfield. With his brother, Don, he won the Interscholastic Doubles Championship of the United States. He was inducted in 1999 into the Princeton Day School Athletic Hall of Fame. Kind, decent, and modest in all things, Dean Mathey will be remembered as a gentleman and devoted, enthusiastic friend of our school, supporting initiatives from the renovation of his family home, Pretty Brook Farm, and the Lisa McGraw '44 Skating Rink, to the annual fund and need-based financial aid. As his health would allow, he visited campus to watch tennis and ice hockey. Maureen and Paul Stellato had the pleasure of hosting him several times him at Behr House, which his father helped design and build. They joined him for lunch at Ferry House some five or so years ago, during one of his infrequent trips to his beloved Princeton. Head of School Paul Stellato reflected: "The success our school enjoys today—and has enjoyed for more than 50 years—is a reflection of the generosity, wisdom, and vision of Dean Mathey and his sons. Their influence is felt in the school's architecture, its grounds, its slate roof, the hidden bookcase and secret passageways in Behr House, the serpentine wall winding through the apple orchard near Pretty Brook Farm. As the history of our great school is written with each passing day, there are—and will continue to be—a small list of names that grace its cover, populate its pages, and crowd its footnotes. That history is shaped forever by the Mathey family." |
