Bio | He was an American tennis player. He graduated from the University of the South and, as a Rhodes scholar, received law degrees from Oxford University. There, he was captain of Oxford's tennis team and the Oxford-Cambridge squad. In 1934, he won amateur tennis singles championships in Sweden, Ireland, Denmark and Scotland. He also played at Wimbledon from 1933 to 1935. Mr. Burwell, then a lawyer with a private practice in Charlotte, received a naval commission in 1941 and during World War II served four years in fighter operations and intelligence on aircraft carriers in the Pacific. After the war, he became a special assistant to the secretary of the Navy for aviation contracts and was a founder and president of the Naval Reserve Association. He resumed his tennis playing in the 1950s and 1960s, winning national senior doubles championships. |
