Bio | After graduating from Huntsville High School in 1951, Charles attended the University of Tennessee before transferring to Rollins College and graduating in 1955. He went on to graduate from St. Lukes Episcopal Seminary, University of the South, Sewanee in 1961. Charles was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and excelled in tennis. In high school he played varsity football, basketball & tennis for 4 years. He was the starting quarterback for 2 years and in tennis he was #1 player for 3 years and captain of the team. He was state high school champion in singles and doubles and the first Huntsville player to win the state championship. He was voted best all-around athlete at Huntsville High. He was voted in Who's Who as best all-around student. He played number one at Tennessee for 2 years and was named all SEC. He later played number one for two years at Rollins College in Florida where he was the number one collegiate player in Florida, a top 10 NCAA player and All-American. The Huntsville Chamber of Commerce sponsored Charles, along with his brother Brick, on the national circuit where he had numerous wins over both American and foreign ranked players and Davis Cuppers. He was selected by the Southern Tennis Association to represent the STA at the US Open in Forest Hills, New York. In 1986, Charles was runner-up Best All Time Player in Huntsville/Madison County in the Huntsville Times poll. He was inducted into the Alabama Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1990. He was an outstanding representative from Huntsville both as an athlete and as a person of the highest standards, morals and character. He put Huntsville on the tennis map in the South and nationally in the 1950's. |
