| Bio | Holding the record for most tournament appearances at Wimbledon with 30 between 1888 and 1922, Arthur Gore won that cherished title three times between 1901 and 1909. Wiry, wily, consistent and durable, Gore was 41 years and 182 days old when he won the last of those championships, becoming the oldest ever to capture the singles title on the British grass. Gore played Davis Cup for Great Britain in its inaugural year of 1900 and again in 1907, and he won the gold medal in both singles and doubles at the 1908 Olympics held in London. Gore also won the singles title at the Scottish Championships in 1892 and successfully defended the title in the Challenge Round in 1893.He won the singles title at the Kent Championships on two occasions; in 1900 by defeating Harold Mahoney in the final in straight sets and in 1906 against A.L. Bentley, also in straight sets. In 1900 and 1908 he won the singles title at the British Covered Court Championships, played at the Queen's Club in London. In May 1908 he won the singles title at the British Covered Court Championships, played at the Queen's Club in London, defeating New Zealander Anthony Wilding in the Challenge Round in four sets. Gore was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. |
