Bio | He learned to play tennis as a boy and became one of the top players in Cincinnati after he moved there as a teenager. He was a singles semi-finalist and a doubles champion at the Tri-State Tennis Tournament in Ohio in 1943 before serving in the Navy during World War II. After the war, Bunis developed a scrap metal brokerage and industrial waste control company. He played men’s singles at Forest Hills, Queens, in the national championships, which became the United States Open. In 1950, he married Ann Johnston, who survives him. In 1970, Bunis played senior doubles at Wimbledon. In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by another son, Henry; a daughter, Catherine McDonough; and seven grandchildren. A third son, William, died before him. Bunis later wrote on senior tennis for Tennis Magazine and, with Roger Williams, wrote “How to Play Winning Tennis in the Prime of Life” (1983). He was 87 when passed away due the cause of stroke complications. |
