Bio A tennis standout from an early age, Alberto “Tico” Carrero had won three U.S. Tennis Association Super National Hard Court Championships by the time he entered Rice. The recipient of a full five-year athletic scholarship, he was captain of the men’s tennis team in 1970 and was a semifinalist at the NCAA Doubles Championship the same year. During his time at Rice, Carrero competed in singles tournament matches against Wimbledon champions Chuck McKinley, Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith and Ilie Nastase and played singles in the U.S. Open from 1967 to 1969. Carrero earned both his B.A. and M.A. in civil engineering from Rice in 1971 and went on to Stanford University, where he earned his M.B.A. in 1973. He began his engineering career in Puerto Rico with Basora and Rodriguez Consulting Engineers in 1973 and currently serves as president of Carrero Engineering, which he founded in 1980.
