Bio | She was a Latvian-born American player. She started playing tennis with her father when she 13 years old and began entering tournaments in 1952. "Vija enjoyed the competitive nature of sport, and she continued to play tennis at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., where she majored in chemistry and minored in math, and later while enrolled in dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduating, she began her dental career at a practice inside the Empire State Building in 1966 and went on to set up her own office on Vanderventer Avenue in Port Washington. When she was pregnant with her first son, she moved her practice into the basement of the house that she still lives in today. Vija was never a full-time dentist – she liked playing tournaments so much that she wanted a job where she could regulate her own hours and set her own schedule – but the career was a perfect fit for her parents, who wanted her to be self-sufficient. She worked as a dentist for 38 years, retiring in 2004. She didn’t stop playing tennis for another decade....in the 1960s, Vija liked playing on grass – it suited her preference of playing short points and getting to the net quickly – and she enjoyed traveling to the summer’s tennis tournaments along the east coast. Frequent annual stops included South Orange, N.J., Merion Cricket Club and Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia and Longwood Cricket Club in Boston."(usopen.org) |
