Bio | Petra Thorén's highest ranking was No. 73 in the singles list in 1992. She represented Finland in the Fed Cup from 1986-1996. The multiple Finnish champion made her debut with the national team at the age of 16 in 1986 against Czech Republic. Finland played that time in the world group - Thorén remembers her first representation with warmth, and the talk still shines with enthusiasm for that moment. "The tournament was really played in the Czech Republic, and at the same time the legendary sportsmen Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova stepped into the elevator - I was like, Wow! The Fed Cup was the first time Navratilova returned to the Czech Republic, a very significant event in itself. This was also the first really big event for me and for the first time I saw world stars." During that Fed Cup trip, Thorén also took her first national team victory over Israel. Thorén's professional career also got off to a good start with these Fed Cup events. However, the injury slightly slowed down her in the following year. Her first professional tournament wins came in 1988 in the UK. "Well, that is the best memory of 1993 from Frankfurt when we reached the top eight in the Fed Cup. We beat Chile and Japan before losing to Australia in the quarterfinals. Athletically, it was a very tough performance. I remember we had a really relaxed feeling to play and a positive mood in every way" - as Thorén recollects. This is Finland's best national team quotation. The team consisted of Thorén, Nanne Dahlman, Katriina Saarinen and Linda Jansson and captain Leo Palin. The Fed Cup quarter-final is one of the highlights of Thorén's career, where she also lists a few other moments. First she highlights her 1991 and best Grand Slam achievement, through qualifying for the main draw and all the way to the third round at the French Open. Second, she remember a tournament in Auckland, New Zealand in 1992, where she reached the semifinals. She also remembers a single victory in the Fed Cup in 1991 when Finland faced Austria - Thorén defeated Barbara Paulus, who was 13th, 6-0, 6-3 on the world list. Gratitude for her career and appreciation for the national team are obvious when talking to Thorén. "The national team meant a lot to me. It was an honor to represent Finland. I also had the same kind of pride when I played in the Finnish Championships. It was always fun to play at Fed Cup because we had a great team spirit. I was always looking forward to the Fed Cup weeks." |
