Bio | She is a professional tennis player from the United States. On July 8, 2013, she reached her career-high WTA singles ranking of world No. 107. On September 26, 2016, she reached her highest doubles ranking of No. 56. Maria Sanchez, who started playing tennis at the age of ten, became a professional player relatively late at the age of 21. Their best performance so far in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the second round in women's doubles at the US Open in 2012 and 2015, as well as 2015 at Wimbledon and 2016 at Melbourne. In January 2014, she won on the side of Canadian Sharon Fichman her first title on the WTA Tour. Sanchez attended the University of Southern California where she was a three-time All-American in singles and doubles. She was the No. 1 collegiate player throughout the 2011–2012 season and was named the ITA Senior Player of the Year. While at USC, star quarterback Matt Barkley was quoted as saying that Sanchez was his favorite athlete on campus. In Sanchez's first full season on tour (2012), she climbed over 530 spots in the world rankings. Sanchez captured the 2012 FSP Gold River Women's Challenger $50,000 title in Northern California, defeating Jessica Pegula in a three-set final. The win marked her first pro title. Sanchez quickly added a second title at the Coleman Vision Championships $75,000 event in Albuquerque, New Mexico in September, where she defeated American teenager Lauren Davis 6–1, 6–1. |
