Bio | 1927 Swiss Champion. Finalist at the Swiss Championships in 1903 and 1912. She thus won the event 24 years after reaching the finals, an impressive feat. Lady, Philanthropist, Tennis Player, and mistress to a British Prime Minister She was born to Elie M. Elliadi (1843-1928), a Greek merchant from Syrna in what was then the Ottoman Empire. Her mother was English. Lady Crosfield competed at the Championships (Wimbledon) in 1911, 1926 and 1928. Known as Lady Crosfield after marriage. Her husband was a multimillionaire soap magnate. This charismtic woman became the mistress of British Prime Minster David Lloyd George. She may have influenced his harsh policies towards Turkey. It it written that ‘her greatest wish was to see Smyrna, the city in which she was born and her family lived, free from the Turks and given to its rightful Greek owners’. In 1929 she ran for parliament but lost the election. Lady Crosfield became most famous for hosting a charity event after Wimbledon for the stars of the inter-war era right through the 1950s. Luminaries and regular guests included Helen Wills Moody and Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II. The Crosfields lived at Witanhurst, a 65 room mansion that was the largest in London with the exception of Buckingham Palace. Her husband lost much of his fortune in the 1930s. Childless, the couple adopted a son named Paul. Domini spoke 6 languages. |
