Bio | Her proper title was Countess Clara von der Schulenburg. She married two counts, but continued to be known as Countess von der Schulenburg. A native of Dusseldorf. Count Viktor Voss was one of the best of the earliest German lawn tennis players, but at least a class or two below the English Doherty brothers in terms of talent. Count Voss was famous for never finishing a match if he was losing. Her sister Anthonie ("Toni") also was a player. It's possible that Clara employed her sister's married name of Popp as an alias; " a Mme Popp" is encountered on the French Riviera. , Per Jimbo "we have Mme Popp finalist at Cannes Beau-Site 1906. As Clara divorced the same year, is possible that she used that nickname just after the divorce. Later she continued to use the Schulenburg surname." Married (1) Oskar Heinrich Hartwig, Count von der Schulenburg, 1895, divorced 1906 Married (2) Viktor Felix Eugen, Count von Voss (1868-1938) in 1928 She also played mixed doubles with Reggie Doherty, where they were "unexpectedly" beaten by Eaves and Mrs Durlacher. This wording also indicates she must have been a rather famous player. Clara Kusenberg Schulenburg played often mixed doubles with Reggie Doherty, they won in 1902 in Monte Carlo, and in 1903 and 1905 in Nice. |
