Bio | Betsy Venter, later known as Betsy Abbas-Venter, was the tennis champion of British origin. She represented three countries: United Kingdom, Egypt and South Africa. In Eastern Mediterranean championships in 1949 with teammates Greiss lost the final of the Women's Doubles to British Curry and Scott. In 1949, she played at Roland Garros, for the first time, as a South African, participated in the doubles, always with her friend Georgina Greiss. After her marriage to Egypt, she participated in the tournaments as Egyptian. She had participated in Wimbledon between 1949-1953 in singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Her best Grand Slam performance came from French Open in 1960 when she reached the quarterfinals and lost to Yola Ramirez. She won 5 tournaments: in Alexandria (1952), in Maadi and Heliopolis (1953, in Cairo and Alexandria (1954). Besides these, she was 3 times finalists: in Cairo in 1947 (lost to Billie Yorke 61 26 26) and in 1954 (lost to Totta Zehden 36 36) and in Torquay in 1954 (lost to Pat Ward 06 36). She reached the semifinal in Cairo in 1952 (lost to Shirley Fry 16 16), in 1953 (lost to Pat Ward 36 64 46), and in 1956 (lost to Angela Mortimer 26 26), in Alexandria in 1956 (lost to Althea Gibson 26 46) and in Saint Moritz in 1960 (lost to Jenny Trewby 16 46). |
