Bio | The son of tennis great Alex Guerry, Alexander “Zan” Guerry III came by his passion for the sport honestly. He and his father won National Father and Son Clay Court Championships in 1966 and 1971 — the latter in the same year Zan graduated from Rice with a B.S. It was the culmination of a brilliant collegiate athletic career in which he lettered in tennis four years, served as captain of the varsity tennis team, and was named an All-American four times. Following his graduation from Rice, Guerry played six years of professional tennis that included appearances at the U.S. and French Opens. The U.S. Tennis Association has ranked him the No. 1 tennis player in three different age groups, and he’s been listed among the top 20 U.S. male tennis players five times. Guerry earned his M.B.A. in 1973 from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He served the Chattanooga, Tenn.–based pharmaceuticals and cosmetics company Chattem Inc. as chairman of the board and chief executive officer. In 1992, he was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame and in 1993 into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame and in 1994 into Southern Tennis Hall of Fame. |
