Biography

Georges Jacques Charles Gault is a French tennis player born on September 17, 1885, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris1. Engaged as a machine gunner, he was killed during the Battle of the Somme by shrapnel on September 3, 1916, in Buicourt2,3,4.

In 1913, he surprised the French Championship by winning the final in five sets against William Laurentz. He lost in the Challenge Round against Max Decugis (6-1, 6-3, 6-4).

After the War created the Georges Gault Cup which pays tribute to him, It takes place every year at All Saints' Day on the wooden covered courts of the Tennis club of Paris which he used to play frequently.
