Biography

Among those in the tennis cognoscenti, Bobby Riggs is rated up near the top of the list of vastly under-rated champions. This master strategist from the United States secured three majors in singles, winning his own national championship twice at Forest Hills and capturing the Wimbledon singles crown once. He moved on to a distinguished career as a pro, taking the U.S. Pro Championships three times. But Riggs, who gained greater fame in his mid-50s when he faced Billie Jean King in the renowned “Battle of the Sexes,” was much greater than the sum of his achievements.
